We are committed to fostering a dynamic and inclusive work environment where creativity and innovation thrive.

Job Description

The Battery AI Research Scientist Intern will bridge the gap between battery research and artificial intelligence. You’ll work closely with our AI and data teams to:
bring scientific depth to the development of Battery AI tools and models, help curate and structure battery datasets, explore AI-driven insights for materials, performance, and failure prediction, and represent our developments in the scientific community.

This is a hands-on, interdisciplinary role ideal for someone passionate about both electrochemistry and machine learning, and eager to see AI reshape the future of energy storage.

Key Responsibilities

1. Battery Science and Data Integration

  • Curate, preprocess, and categorize experimental and simulation data from various battery sources (e.g., cycling, EIS, post-mortem, electrolyte composition, manufacturing logs).

  • Work with Object’s scientists and engineers to develop battery-specific data schemas for Battery AI tools and models.

  • Annotate and tag datasets with precise experimental context (materials, test conditions, degradation mechanisms).

  • Collaborate on mapping battery KPIs and physics-based variables to machine-learning-ready formats.

2. AI/ML and Model Development

  • Assist in developing and validating domain-specific foundation models for battery R&D.

  • Participate in fine-tuning large language and multimodal models using curated battery data.

  • Evaluate model outputs, accuracy, and reasoning quality on domain tasks (e.g., electrolyte optimization, lifetime prediction).

  • Research and prototype AI methods (transformers, graph neural networks, symbolic ML) for physical science data.

3. Knowledge & Community Engagement

  • Connect with academic labs and industrial battery manufacturers to expand Object’s collaboration network.

  • Contribute to whitepapers, publications, benchmark datasets, and technical documentation.

  • Represent Object at battery conferences and workshops (e.g., ECS, IMLB, AABC, Beyond Lithium, etc).

  • Translate community feedback into actionable improvements for the AI agent.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Ph.D. (preferred) or advanced Master’s in:

    • Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Applied Physics, or

    • Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science (with strong interest in energy materials).

  • Deep understanding of battery systems (Li-ion, solid-state, next-gen chemistries).

  • Familiarity with battery testing, degradation mechanisms, or manufacturing workflows.

  • Practical experience with Python, data analysis, or ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn).

  • Knowledge of scientific data formats (CSV, HDF5, JSON, ELN/LIMS data).

  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Publications in battery modeling, electrochemistry, or ML for materials science.

  • Familiarity with large language models (LLMs) or foundation models.

  • Experience with data cleaning and ontology design for scientific data.

  • Exposure to HPC environments or cloud-based AI workflows.

What We Offer

  • Front-row experience in building a scientific LLM and AI R&D agent for real-world applications.

  • Opportunity to publish and present AI–Battery intersection research with Object and Object’s prestigious collaborators.

  • Mentorship from interdisciplinary battery and AI scientists and engineers.

  • Connection with battery industry and industrial experts on battery technology developments
